Jan 8, 2007 - If your Linn LP12 has the Basik tonearm, I'd try either of the Audio Technica. Oh, and one last word on the Basik tonearm: the LVV's horizontal. I had a Sondek with that arm years ago - I tried a Denon 160 on it, and did not think it brought out the best in the cartridge. If you have a Denon hanging around, give it a go - but don't buy one especially for the LV-X. The lighter cartridges are more suitable.

I thought the Garrott P77 was a much better match in the LV-X than the Denon - well, it's a much better cartridge anyway. I also liked a Grado Signature MR in that arm. I'm not crazy about moving coils in the LV-X, but that was 20 years ago.

Linn Basik LVX I used to own the tonearm which I used on my Thorens TD-124 and then later on my Linn LP12 which I still own. I have since gone on to a Linn Ittok and then to a Naim ARO which I still have. The LVX is a very good arm for the money that works well with both tables I used.

I used Grado MM cartridges followed by a Linn K9 MM. Both of these combinations produced fine results. I would be suspect of the K9 because it might be fairly old.

There are several good Grado MM cartridges, some that are reasonably priced, that should work well with your Thorens and LVX. I have owned a 160 (non super) with a Linn LVX Basik for the last 5 years. It is a nice musical table. I bought mine on Agon and it came with an AT440ml cart and it worked very well with the arm. I am not sure of their current value, but I have seen the arms sell for $150-$200 alone. The 160 Super is probably worth $250-$300 without an arm, maybe more depending on condition. The value seems to have gone up some since I bought mine.

I went with the Audio Technica AT440ML and it ended up sounding much better.As for my Basik LV-X arm, I ended up selling it off about 7 years ago. As for my thoughts on the Linn Basik LV-X arm (and even the LV-V and Plus arms), I'm not impressed with the bearing quality on any of them (but certain compromises had to be made to keep the cost low). I took apart damaged Basik LV-V and Plus arms and discovered the horizontal bearing races are not hardened, as they were 'dimpled' from careless shipping/mishandling (in fact, the LV-V has a brass race that is chrome plated for it's hardness, while the Plus has a harder steel race, but not hardened - I was able to drill through them).

Still, if the arm is handled carefully and undamaged (must be shipped or transported with counterweight removed), it will likely provide years of reliable service and do the job perfectly fine with a good MM cartridge (higher compliance preferably). The Akito has hardened cage bearings, but the MK1's open cage horizontal bearings and even the dust guarded verticals are prone to corrosion/sticking (more likely in humid climates?), often requiring a disassembly and bearing replacement (the MK2 has dust guards on all four bearings and seem to be fixed in this respect). The Ittok, on the other hand, seems to have smoother bearings (I never dismantled one of those arms, but I have to believe it's bearings are far superior to the aforementioned Basik arms).
